With band in tow, Jasper Sloan Yip has spent the last five years cutting his teeth on stages all over Canada. Having just wrapped recording sessions for his third album, Foxtrot, Jasper and company are set to start the cycle all over again. Jasper’s beginnings were humble. A self-taught musician, he released his self-recorded debut White Elephant in the summer of 2007 to a crowd of friends and family in the back yard of his childhood home in Vancouver.
Three days after the release, Jasper set music aside to travel and boarded a one-way flight to Paris. Ten months and fifteen countries later, he returned to Vancouver and began work on his earnest and infectious sophomore effort Every Day and All at Once.
Released in the summer of 2010, the album was an immediate success, garnering local, national, and international radio play. Its songs traveled far, climbing national indie charts and appearing on network television. Riding this wake, Jasper and his band toured most of Canada and showcased at some major festivals, such as the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Canada Music Week, Sled Island, and Rifflandia, to name a few.
Jasper and his band regrouped in 2012 to begin work on Foxtrot. Recorded in the autumn of that year and the winter that followed, Foxtrot boasts a more expansive and adventurous sound than any of Jasper’s previous work. Foxtrot is scheduled for release this July, with a cross Canada tour to immediately follow.
About The Song:
Show Your Teeth is the first single from my forthcoming album Foxtrot. The album deals with love in a lot of different ways. Each song is has something to say on the subject. This song is both a warning and a prescription. It says that despite our best intentions, relationships hurt, and sometimes you just have to get mad at each other!
This month we played a benefit for the Shanti Uganda Society, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving infant and maternal health, and supporting women living HIV/AIDS in Uganda. We also just played a rally for Youth For Climate Justice Now. They organized an Earth Day rally on Commercial Drive to help raise awareness about climate change. On May 16th we’ll be playing a fundraiser to benefit Cineworks Annex (a local non-profit artist-run production and exhibition centre) as well as Last Chance Animal Rescue (a local non-profit animal rescue society).
