Album Review
"The tracks featured have been re-recorded by the original artist," reads a disclaimer in small but readable text on the back cover of this disc, and that will tell most potential buyers all they need to know. For anyone not immediately put off, however, it can be reported that
Brook Benton
's re-recordings of his hits heard here are effectively performed and that this is one way of getting on a single disc both his many familiar songs that appeared in their original recordings on Mercury Records (owned by major label Universal) and "Rainy Night in Georgia," a major hit in its original recording on Cotillion Records (owned by Atlantic Records, in turn controlled by major-label Warner). Conflicting ownership tends to make it difficult to put all of
Benton
's hits on the same album, and re-recording solves that problem. You still want to stick to the originals, though.
